Our lolita spotlight centers around those who wear and adore the Japanese fashion known as ‘lolita’! Today we talk with someone with a unique style - a brolita known to the fashion community as Ivie Loli.

What’s your name?

The name i go by for lolita is Ivie.

 

What got you initially interested in lolita?

I love telling this story. All of my life i have been semi transgender. I never quite felt right in my own skin per say. I have cross dressed in the past but i was never in a stable enough environment where it would stick. On December 16, 2011 i was at a local convention when i saw my first lolita. I normally would not have gone to this first year tiny con but it was a birthday gift. She was in a tone down sweet dress with a split pigtail wig. Seeing her just made my jaw drop, this was EVERYTHING i wanted! It was cute, it was fluffy and (the substyle i had picked) was very very feminine.  After doing some digging I found that more than just the clothing was great about lolita, the subculture was also quite refreshing.

So you decided to start wearing lolita fashion at that point? Which pieces caught your eye?

I started to look into it at that point. Once i had got a fair bit of info I think made the jump into working towards that goal.

The dresses that caught my eyes the most were those that are a bit over the top. My two dream dresses are Meta’s Fairy Tail and Angelic Pretty’s Aqua Princess (both being the OP).

So tons of pinks or cute frills that don’t go too crazy. Sadly though do to my body type i cannot wear most brand outfits. I THINK i can wear meta, but only some of their outfits. After a bit of searching and looking i found Dolldelight and feel in love with her dresses.

Dolldelight’s definitely a creative force in the fashion! She’s brought about a lot of interesting designs and different looks with her designs. And speaking of that - what changes do you hope to see in lolita in the future, both aesthetically and as a fashion community?

That is a tough one. Aesthetically is something that is hard to predict. So many things can push and pull on the fashion as a whole that it goes in wildly odd directions. An example is some of the old gear that used to be sold. You don’t see witch hatch anymore do you? Now a days some of the things that were put out in the past people wouldn’t touch with a 30 foot pole. The point is we wont know till it happens. Either way I’m not one to go with fads so I’ll most likely still be doing my own thing.

What changes would i like to see in the community is also quite a tough one. If anything i would like to see the public hate gone. Everything is not for everyone i can understand that. I just don’t think that these sites of girls smashing each other publicly is a good thing. Hate will never do good for a community. If anything it will stifle and slow it down to the point where ever dress being made looks the same just with a different print because the new designers are scared to do anything new for fear of backlash from the community.

Are there any final words you’d like to say before we wrap this up?

Final thoughts type thing? mmmmmm…

Everyone has there reason to dress in lolita. Always remember why YOU do it. There will always be haters and they are going try to put you down. Just ignore them and keep on doing your thing! You dress this way for you, not for them.
